Aurel Petronis: Die neue EP "You" des SLOTH-SOUND Zweitautors
The new conceptual EP simply titled You by the now 16 years old German-Lithuanian alternative- and indie-rock-artist Aurel Petronis is out now, featuring the single Spiral Never Died and a brand new version of the previously released title-track.
The project was recorded in home studio sessions in Rostock together with producer Matti Weidlich, additional musicians Raoul Biedinger, known from the Rostocker indie-funk-band Animal’s Secret, and Noah Maxeiner, as well as Oskar Vier as a mental and creative support.
Sound-wise You is a gigantic step forward for Aurel Petronis as it is his most complex and thought-out work yet. The opening-track The Garden is a standout with its either blissful or heavily rockish guitars, drums that were recorded live and the first appearance of synthesizers reproducing the sound of strings. Furthermore Raoul Biedinger drives the song with his playful and technically versed guitar solos.
With The Morning Smell Aurel Petronis follows up The Garden folky and intimate bringing in the acoustic guitar that ended The Garden. The Morning Smell was largely recorded in a shorter part of one session and then went untouched to keep the raw sound and therefor the warm, natural atmosphere. It is a personal favorite of mine as it incorporates the recording of a real and unplayed dialogue at the end underlining the gently played acoustic guitar.
The third track Unending Bliss was already a fan favorite at gigs and works even better in the context of the EP counteracting The Morning Smell through a catchy bassline, bossa nova influence and ever changing drum beats. The single Spiral Never Died continuously goes down the path of being more memorable and familiar than the first two tracks.
The Interlude for You then sets the tone for the final track You with a progression of lightly distorted Wah-chords over which Matti Weidlich reverses a guitar played by Aurel Petronis. As the psychedelic interlude comes to an end, bird sounds take over and carry on into the long known guitar loop of You.
You is easily the most beautiful and heart-breaking track on the EP culminating in mind blowing vocal harmonies accompanied by several layers of guitar.
Aurel Petronis grew up under the musical influence of his Lithuanian mother who is an opera singer and vocal coach. His father is co-owner of a gallery and listens to classic-rock-music and more. Originally learning the piano Aurel Petronis later discovered his passion for the guitar and also most recently for the drums. Another influence on his music taste was Oskar Vier who is related to Aurel Petronis as well.
In the second half of 2019 Aurel Petronis released his first music on SoundCloud. The first track to ever be put out was Death Valley on the 16th August of 2019. Demos of Daddy Kink and The Feeling Called Love followed shortly thereafter. In March 2020 new versions of these songs came out together with standout track Night Driving and the gimmicky song Take 152. This project called Death Valley EP features a raw sound, rough drums and in retrospective, especially compared to the new EP You, sounds like a collection of demos that nevertheless works as a coherent unit of musically developed songs. Recently the most popular one of them Daddy Kink even breached the mark of 1,500 streams on Spotify.
Death Valley EP and Aurel Petronis’ sound in general have especially been shaped by Jeff Buckley’s catalogue. From all of Petronis’ musical idols he can be found in his music to the largest degree. Other musical influences include the band Foals and there guitar loops and general guitar playing, indie-prince Mac DeMarco and his love songs, Tame Impala, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Cure, Nick Drake and Radiohead. While you can find elements of parts of each of their individual styles, Jeff Buckley remained the most prominent which is what brings us back to the EP You, because this is the first Aurel Petronis project where he breaks loose more and more from Jeff Buckley and at the same time begins to refer to more other artists, many of them can be found in the enumeration above.
Die neue, konzeptionell gestaltete EP You des 16 Jahre alten, deutsch-litauischen, Alternative- und Indie-Rock-Künstlers Aurel Petronis ist jetzt verfügbar und enthält die Single Spiral Never Died und eine brandneue Version des bereits vorab veröffentlichten Titeltracks.
Das Projekt wurde in Heimstudio-Sessions in Rostock aufgenommen, zusammen mit Produzent Matti Weidlich, den zusätzlichen Musikern Raoul Biedinger, der auch in der Rostocker Indie-Funk-Band Animal's Secret spielt, und Noah Maxeiner sowie Oskar Vier als mentale und kreative Unterstützung.
You ist soundtechnisch ein großer Schritt nach vorne für Aurel Petronis und sein komplexestes und weitgedachtestes Werk bis jetzt. Der Opener The Garden sticht heraus, mit seinen entweder paradischen oder sehr rockigen Gitarren, live aufgenommenem Schlagzeug und der ersten Nutzung von Synthesizern, die den Klang von Streichern replizieren. Raoul Biedinger treibt den Song zudem mit seinen verspielten und technisch versierten Gitarren-Soli an.
Mit The Morning Smell macht Aurel Petronis da weiter, wo er mit The Garden aufgehört hat: Akustik-Gitarre erzeugt eine folkige und intime Atmosphäre. The Morning Smell wurde größtenteils in einem kleinen Teil einer Aufnahmesession aufgenommen und wurde dann nicht mehr angerührt, um den rohen Sound zu wahren, der für die natürliche und warme Atmosphärik mitverantwortlich ist.
Der dritte Song Unending Bliss war schon auf Live-Konzerten ein Fan-Favorit und funktioniert im EP-Kontext sogar noch besser, indem er The Morning Smell mit einer catchy Bassline, Bossanova-Einflüssen, immer wieder wechselnden Drum-Beats und reduzierter Laufzeit konterkariert. Spiral Never Died setzt diesen Weg eingängigerer und kürzer gefasster Musik fort.
Das Interlude for You bereit den Hörer schließlich auf das Finale vor. Dazu nimmt Aurel Petronis ein paar stark verzerrte Wah-Akkorde und Matti Weidlich kehrt darüber ein Gitarrensolo von Aurel Petronis um. Sobald das psychedelische Interlude zu einem Ende kommt, übernimmt Vogelgezwitscher, das perfekt und nahtlos in den Closer You überleitet.
You ist locker der schönste und herzzebrechendste Song der EP. Der Titeltrack kulminiert in atemberaubenden Vocal-Harmonien.
Aurel Petronis ist unter dem musikalischen Einfluss seiner litauischen Mutter aufgewachsen, die eine Opernsängerin und Gesangslehrerin ist. Sein Vater ist Mitbesitzer einer Gallerie und hört unter anderem klassischen Rock. Er lernte zuerst das Klavierspielen und entdeckte später seine Leidenschaft für die (E-)Gitarre.
In der zweiten Hälfte von 2019 veröffentlichte Aurel Petronis seine erste Musik auf SoundCloud. Der erste Song, den er je herausbrachte war Death Valley am 16. August 2019. Die Death Valley EP und Aurel Petronis' genereller Sound sind besonders stark von Jeff Buckley's gesamtem Katalog beeinflusst worden. Von all seinen musikalischen Idolen kann er am meisten in seiner Musik wiedergefunden werden.
